St. Bavo's Cathedral Visitor Center, Ghent
Structural engineering and building services design, preparation of contract documents, and site supervision (construction of the visitor center and restoration of the ambulatory chapels)
For the construction of the new visitor center and the restoration of the ambulatory chapels at St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent, De Klerck Engineering carried out a highly complex study covering structural engineering and building services. To construct an underground concrete technical basement below the groundwater table, inclined grout piles were driven to a depth of -4 meters beneath the monumental cathedral walls.
In addition, a sophisticated, discreet HVAC system was designed to protect the centuries-old murals and the new, actively climate-controlled display case for the world-famous Ghent Altarpiece. The entire technical infrastructure, including 10 km of cabling, was seamlessly integrated into the historic setting.
