Hiëronymus Brotherhood School, Sint-Niklaas
Structural engineering, building services design, and energy performance study for a new primary school for 350 students in Sint-Niklaas.
For the Hiëronymus Brothers’ School in Sint-Niklaas, De Klerck Engineering was responsible for the structural engineering and building services design, and EPB reporting for a new primary school for 350 students. The new building replaced outdated school infrastructure and comprises a three-story main building, a separate restroom block, classrooms, homeroom classrooms, theory classrooms, administrative offices, and a cafeteria.
The technical design was tailored to ensure comfort, energy efficiency, and efficient management of the school buildings. Heat is generated by two gas-fired condensing boilers operating in cascade, controlled by a weather-compensated and optimized control system. All enclosed rooms are mechanically ventilated according to System D, supplemented by a heat pump as part of the technical concept.
In addition, the project includes a building management system to control HVAC, ventilation, pumps, alarms, fire alarm signaling, and lighting. Rainwater is reused for toilet flushing, while LED lighting and occupancy sensors limit energy consumption. The result is a sustainable and functional learning environment was created within an urban context and on a limited budget.
