Outpatient Surgery Unit, UZ Leuven
Structural engineering, building service, and EPB studies for the renovation of the former emergency and ambulance hall into an outpatient surgery unit at UZ Leuven
De Klerck Engineering was responsible for the structural engineering study, technical specifications, EPB reporting, contract documents, and site supervision for UZ Leuven during the conversion of the former emergency and ambulance hall into outpatient surgery suites. The new facility was designed for procedures that do not require a high-tech operating room.
The program included eight treatment rooms, including two procedure rooms designed to accomodate a Surgicube for ophthalmological procedures, and an overnight-stay unit with four double rooms and eleven single rooms. The existing mechanical and electrical systems were dismantled in phases, temporarily bypassed, and replaced with new technical installations tailored to the needs of a medical environment.
The project was designed entirely in 3D in accordance with BIM standards and submitted for the 2019 BIM Awards. Thanks to this approach, structural stability, building services, and construction could be precisely coordinated within a complex hospital setting, while adhering to the schedule, budget, and quality standards.
