The project

De Klerck Engineering provided the complete structural engineering and building services studies, and EPB reporting for the expansion and renovation of Blocks A and B at AZ Sint-Lucas in Ghent. The project, funded by a VIPA grant, included the demolition of the old Block A, the construction of a new wing, and the renovation of the existing Block B (ground floor through level 3).

The structural challenges included adding a new technical level (+4) on top of the existing load-bearing structure and constructing complex support structures and portal frames for openings in existing concrete beam walls. The building services design followed climate-responsive design (GRO) principles, including a connection to the district heating network, PV panels, nighttime ventilation, free cooling, and an energy performance rating of E47.
