Heikant Sports Hall, Arendonk
Structural engineering, building services design, and EPB reporting for the construction of a sustainable sports hall with a CLT structure, geothermal heating, and a PV system in Arendonk
For the Heikant Sports Hall in Arendonk, De Klerck Engineering was responsible for the structural analysis, building services design, and EPB reporting as part of an integrated Design & Build approach. The new sports complex, spanning approximately 4,860 m², combines three full-size sports fields, multifunctional sports halls, locker rooms, a cafeteria, and support facilities into a sustainable gathering place for athletes, clubs, and visitors.
The technical design was tailored to intensive and varied use, with a focus on comfort, air quality, and energy performance. The sports hall is heated and cooled by a groundwater heat pump connected to a geothermal BEO field, supplemented by underfloor heating, a demand-controlled ventilation system (Type D) with heat recovery, decentralized heat pump water heaters, rainwater recovery, and a complete LED lighting system. Thanks in part to 320 kWp PV system, the building achieves an E-level of 13.
The structural analysis also played a key role in the project’s sustainability. The superstructure of the sports hall was designed as a timber truss structure using glued laminated timber and CLT, featuring large clear spans and a welcoming environment for sports activities. Combined with a carefully designed foundation, fire protection and low-voltage systems, a new medium-voltage substation, and an energy-efficient elevator system, this results in a future-ready sports facility with a limited ecological footprint.
